This Party Dude is still a blast in 2012

Every few years we get a new batch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures which always seem to offer something new to fans of the mean, green, pizza eating machines. This year, however, there are two very different styles of turtles offered. One style offered by Playmates are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection, larger action figures based on the classic 1988 cartoon and action figure line. I've reviewed most of those already, so today I'm looking at a figure from the second style offered which are based on the look of the upcoming cartoon series from Nickelodeon. These figures are crafted in a smaller scale (5 in.), feature a wider array of characters, and are more geared towards kids than adult collectors. That's ok, though, because it just means that these turtles offer us something different. Right now I'm looking at Michelangelo, the fun loving party dude of the TMNT. Is this guy a party dude or a party dud, though? Read on!

The Facts:
Articulation: pin/hinge ball jointed knees, pin/hinge ball jointed thighs, pin/hinge ball jointed shoulders, pin/hinge ball jointed elbows, swivel wrists, true ball jointed neck.

Accessories: two nunchucks, two small throwing stars, two large throwing starts, one kusarigama (a sickle/kama on a chain with a weight on the end).

Positives:

*The look of each turtle in this series is very different: there is no parts reuse between the turtles. Michelangelo is shorter than the rest of his brothers and has his own unique skin textures, scars, and pads/wrist wraps. I love the design on these figures. I don't think they look exactly like the new animation, but that's ok by me. This Mikey has all white eyes under his orange bandanna with brown belts, pads, and ankle wraps. He's a more neon green than his brothers, giving him a unique look. They really look quite a bit like some of the comic renditions of the turtles over the years, which is fine by me. Some people have complained that these guys have 3 toes (the turtles have always had two) but they've always had three fingers, so I really don't mind this at all.

*The articulation is solid. This guy is lots of fun to pick up and mess around with by putting him in crazy ninja poses. This isn't a collector's figure: he's meant to be played with!

*Michelangelo comes with quite a few nice accessories. Other than his obligatory nunchucks, the verious throwing stars and the kusarigama give him some great variety in display options. The nunchucks can be stored in the loops on the back of Mikey's belt (the throwing stars can be wedged in there also, if you'd like).

Negatives:
*My only compliant is that plastic chain on Michelangelo's nunchucks easily shows stress marks when you place both handles of the nunchucks in the belt loops. I'm not sure what could have been done to prevent this (maybe a softer plastic?) but it's just something to be aware of.

Overall: I love these guys. While the other figures in this new TMNT series are all over the place, the 4 turtles are excellent action figures. Probably some of the best action figures you'll find on regular retail shelves this year. If you're a fan of the TMNT, make sure you at least pick up the 4 turtles in this line. You're not going to regret it.

5-year-old boy heaven!

My 5 year old son loves this - he received all four turtles for his birthday and hasn't put them down much since then. These are the perfect size for playing with, their arms/legs manipulate well, and the various weapons are detailed and fun to play with and interchange. I just can't believe these things are still popular after 30+ years!

Great gift for a 7 yr old boy's birthday

Bought for my 7 yr olds birthday and he could not be happier. He loves these guys and Mikey is his favorite. I loved the price too.
